LA TRAMA // PLOT

Estate 2015, oggi.

Chi erano i nemici dell’impero? Quale misterioso popolo dovrà combattere l’arciere?

Summer 2015, contemporary. A tourist arrives in Ulaanbaatar; after losing her job in Italy, she decides to undertake a last minute adventure in Mongolia. Leaving her troubles behind she is ready to discover one of the last pristine places on the planet: the Gobi Desert.
Summer 1315, eight hundred years ago. An archer crosses the desert to join the Khan’s troop, stationed to south of Karakorum. A battle will take place the very next morning and he, one of the best warriors, has been summoned by the Golden Horde to serve the largest empire in the world. He leads his trusted bow and all his braveness. He holds the hope to win.
Contemporary. The tourist takes her first steps in the Mongolian capital. She struggles with the traffic, language and to organize her trip. She tackles the chaos of Ulaanbaatar determined to reach the ocean of sand and stones of the stunning land in the core of the continent. After she finds a group of travelers and figures out the transport, the tourist begins her journey. Suddenly she sees an odd thing on the pebbly ground of her path. It is a claw, probably belonging to some kind of a beast. A claw that hides a terrible secret.
Centuries ago. The archer arrives at the camp and quietly follows the usual routine before the fight. Weapons, food, comrades and… the battlefield. A terrifying scenario.
He attends the elders’ council to find out who will be the enemy tomorrow, who will be the target of the fury of the Khan this time, for the glory and for the longevity of the empire. But there is no aim for glory, no urge of anger this time. Instead, the elders’ council talks about legendary enemies, capable of unspeakable behaviors, subject to heinous crimes. The archer trembles at the memory of the stories he heard as a child, tales of an ancient people, guardians of the forbidden secrets, covered by a blanket of mystery, fear and superstition. Not for anger, not for glory. To fight, not to honor the Khan, not for rescue the empire, this time, but rather beg for the sand and stones of the desert to swallow the memory of what is to happen.
Timelines weave the facts, unraveling the story. Our contemporary protagonist stumbles upon a number of disclosing ancient facts – horrible reminders of what happened that were deleted from the chronicles, from the memory, from the history of the Mongolian people and the whole world.

We do not like labelling our project but we will give you a clue!

The question of what genre our graphic novel belongs to has different answers.
The non-fiction approach is essential: we want to capitalize our experiences in Mongolia and describe the reality as we see it. We also want be accurate as much as possible about clothes, ornaments, weapons and military life of the period of the great Mongol empire.
However, our work does not only materialize as a historical comic, since the fiction archeology is an essential part of the story: a dash of fantastic and paranormal, inspired by the popular legends and beliefs about the mysterious people from “the white star”, is the main ingredient of our story. We will reinterpret such beliefs and we find out real connections with historical facts, archaeological evidences and traditional tales, in order to complete the puzzle.
Furthermore, the occult will give us an excuse to explore the topic of shamanism, which remains an important part of the Mongolian culture.
Will there be superheroes? Definitely not! Only brave warriors, a reckless tourist roaming around Mongolia and the dramatic charm of the great empire of Genghis Khan!
What mystery is the Gobi’s sand burying? What secret is the Blue Sky concealing? And how an archer may change the fate of a war?
